SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SQL Server 2005, when you try to create a full-text index on a table, you receive the following error message:
Msg 7644, Level 17, State 1, Line 2
Full-text crawl manager has not been initialized. Any crawl started before the crawl manager was fully initialized will need to be restarted. Please restart SQL Server and retry the command. You should also check the error log to fix any failures that might have caused the crawl manager to fail.
You also receive this error message when you try to change a full-text catalog.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the SQL Server FullText Search engine cannot load the value of the
FTSGroup
registry entry from the following registry subkey. Therefore, the crawl manager cannot be initialized.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.x\Setup\
Note In this subkey, x in the MSSQL.x entry represents the corresponding value for the instance ID in the system.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, make sure that the value of the
FTSGroup
registry entry is the security identifier (SID) of the group that is created for SQL Server FullText Search. To set the correct SID of the
FTSGroup
registry entry, follow these steps:
  1. Open Computer Management.
  2. In the navigation pane, expand Systems Tools, expand Local Users and Groups, and then click Groups.
  3. Note the name of the group that is created for SQL Server FullText Search. The name resembles the following:
    SQLServer2005MSFTEUser$ComputerName$InstanceName
  4. In the PsGetSid command prompt utility, run the following command:
    psgetsid \\ComputerName SQLServer2005MSFTEUser$ComputerName$InstanceName

To obtain the PsGetSid command prompt utility, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897417.aspx
  5. Note the SID for the group that is created for SQL Server FullText Search.
  6. Start Registry Editor, and then locate the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.x\Setup\
  7. Set the value of the
    FTSGroup
registry entry to the SID that you noted in step 5.
  8. Exit Registry Editor.
  9. Restart the SQL Server FullText Search engine by using SQL Server Configuration Manager.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
