SYMPTOMS

When you try to download some Web Services Description Language (WSDL) files in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0, you receive the following error message:
Configuration Error Parser Error Message: The value of the property 'type' cannot be parsed.
The error is: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Crm.WebServices' or one of its dependencies.
The system cannot find the file specified. Source Error:

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the MSCRMServices directory is configured as a virtual directory in Internet Information Services (IIS).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
  1. On the computer that is running the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 server, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Expand the computer name, expand Web Sites, and then expand Microsoft Dynamics CRM.
  3. Right-click MSCRMServices, and then click Properties.
  4. Click Remove.
  5. Click OK.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. On the computer that is running the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 server, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Expand the computer name, expand Web Sites, and then expand Microsoft Dynamics CRM.
  3. Right-click MSCRMServices, and then click Properties.
  4. Click Create.
  5. Click OK.
  6. On the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Web client, click Settings, click Customization, and then click Download Web Service Description Files.
  7. Click CrmService.asmx, or click MetadataService.asmx.
