Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
-
You connect a Windows Server 2008-based computer to a storage device that is controlled by Microsoft Multipath I/O (MPIO).
-
The MPIO-controlled storage device contains paging files.
-
An MPIO path fails over to another path and is then restored
-
You try to shut down or restart the computer.
In this scenario, you receive the following Stop error message during the shutdown process:
Stop: 0x0000009F (0x00000003, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4)
DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
Note The parameters in this Stop error message vary, depending on the computer's configuration.
Cause
After an MPIO path fails over and is restored, the DO_POWER_PAGABLE flag in the original path's device object is not cleared as expected. This flag causes the disk in the original path to be prematurely put into low-power mode during system shutdown. Therefore, when the system tries to perform page-swapping operations during system shutdown, these operations fail because the disk device object that holds the paging files is no longer responsive.
Resolution
Hotfix information
Important Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, only one of these products may be listed on the “Hotfix Request” page. To request the hotfix package that applies to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, just select the product that is listed on the page.
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.
