SYMPTOMS

A Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 service does not start after a change is made to a server object or to a service object in the trusted server list in Active Directory. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following when the service is restarted:
Source: OCS Protocol Stack
Name: Stack - The server configuration validation mechanism detected some serious problems.
Description: The server configuration validation mechanism detected some serious problems.

ERRORS:

Two server roles at FQDN [nnnn] have different server version numbers. First server has GUID {nnnnnnnn-nnnn-nnnn-nnnn-nnnnnnnnnnnn} and role 'Conferencing Server' (version 3). Second server has GUID {nnnnnnnn-nnnn-nnnn-nnnn-nnnnnnnnnnnn} and role 'Enterprise Edition' (version 4)
For example, this problem may occur when a trusted Globally Routable User Agent URI (GRUU) service type adds or changes support for cross-forest communication.

Note This problem does not affect a service that was started before a change is made to a server object or to a service object. However, if the service is stopped after the change is made, the service does not restart.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when there is a conflicting entry in the server object or in the service object in Active Directory.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) Edit tool (Adsiedit.msc) to edit the server object or the service object to delete the conflicting entry.
