RAPID PUBLISHING

RAPID PUBLISHING ARTICLES PROVIDE INFORMATION DIRECTLY FROM WITHIN THE MICROSOFT SUPPORT ORGANIZATION. THE INFORMATION CONTAINED HEREIN IS CREATED IN RESPONSE TO EMERGING OR UNIQUE TOPICS, OR IS INTENDED SUPPLEMENT OTHER KNOWLEDGE BASE INFORMATION.

Symptom

If you enable certificates on a Windows 2008 Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) print server you cannot connect to a printer via HTTPs. RPC connections to the same printer works fine.  If ignoring certificates IPP printing works as expected.

When you try to install a printer using Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) with Secure Socket Layer (SSL) the printer installation fails and the drivers are not installed.

You receive an error similar to the following:

Printer Installation Failed, Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

Cause

IPP does not support certificates.

More Information

Windows 2008 supports basic/digest and NTLM/Integrated as authentication schemes.
