Windows Server 2003 SP2-based domain controllers return incorrect error code to Kerberos requests during the shutdown processArticle ID: 962994 - View products that this article applies to. On This PageSYMPTOMSDuring the shutdown process, a Windows Server 2003 SP2-based domain controller incorrectly returns the following error code to all Kerberos requests: KDC_ERR_C_PRINCIPAL_UNKNOWN Applications or services may interpret the error code to mean "no such user." Therefore, an application or service may incorrectly deny user authentication requests. For example, the incorrect error code causes the BizTalk service to crash. The error also forces the service to be restarted every time that the Windows Server 2003-based domain controller is shut down. RESOLUTIONA hotfix is available to resolve this problem. After you apply this hotfix, the Windows Server 2003 SP2-based domain controller returns the following error code if the domain controller receives requests during the shutdown process: KDC_ERR_SVC_UNAVAILABLE Hotfix informationA supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article.
