SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) or certain post-SP3 security bulletins, the TIF, TIFF, and MDI files are no longer associated with Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MODI).

CAUSE

When you apply Office 2003 SP3, the following keys are deleted intentionally because of the security changes that were made in Office 2003 SP3. Later, you may reassociate the TIF, TIFF, and MDI files to MODI. Then, when you apply a post-SP3 update, these three keys are deleted again:
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.tif
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.tiff
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mdi
When these keys are deleted, TIF, TIFF, and MDI files are no longer associated with MODI.

RESOLUTION

This problem is resolved in the Word 2003 hotfix package that was released on February 24, 2009. For more information about the hotfix package, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
967054 Description of the Word 2003 hotfix package (Modifileassoc.msp): February 24, 2009
Note This hotfix package is authored in such a way that it will reassociate TIF, TIFF, and MDI files with MODI only. If you had these file types associated with an application other than MODI, you have to reassociate them manually or by using the sample Visual Basic script that is documented in the "Workaround" section of the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
