Symptoms

When you try to open a file that has the .eml file name extension, the file does not open in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003. However, this file opens in Outlook Express, in Windows Mail, and in Internet Explorer.

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

Install the Outlook 2003 hotfix package that is dated February 24, 2009, and then set the registry to enable the hotfix package. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Install the Outlook 2003 hotfix package that is dated February 24, 2009. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  2. Set the registry to enable the hotfix package. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start Registry Editor.
      • In Windows Vista, click Start

        , type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

        User Account Control
        If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.
      • In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:
      HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft Internet Mail Message\shell\open\command
    3. Right-click (Default), and then click Modify.
    4. Type "%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office11\Outlook.exe" /eml "%1", and then click OK.
    5. On the File menu, click Exit to exit Registry Editor.

Method 2

Install the Outlook 2003 hotfix package that is dated February 24, 2009, and then use the command-line to open .eml files. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Install the Outlook 2003 hotfix package that is dated February 24, 2009. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  2. Use the command-line to open .eml files. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Open a Command Prompt window.
