Article ID: 967470 - Last Review: June 16, 2009 - Revision: 3.0 FIX: Error message when you perform an update or a delete operation on a table that does not have a clustered index created in SQL Server 2005 and in SQL Server 2008: "The operating system returned error 1450"Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fix release. On This PageSYMPTOMSConsider the following scenario. In Microsoft SQL Server 2005 orin Microsoft SQL Server 2008, you have a table that does not have a clustered index created in a large database. You create a database snapshot for the database. When you perform an update or a delete operation on the table by using a predicate condition to modify a small number of rows, you receive the following error message: The operating system returned error 1450(Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.) to SQL Server during a write at offset 0x0000159d8ae000 in file with handle 0x0000000000000AAC. This is usually a temporary condition and the SQL Server will keep retrying the operation. If the condition persists then immediate action must be taken to correct it. CAUSEWhen you update or delete some rows on the table by using a predicate condition, SQL Server performs a scan for the table. All pages that are scanned are marked as dirty in the table. However, only some of these pages are changed. The scan results in a copy-on-write operation for these pages to the snapshot database and causes an error. After you apply this Hotfix, SQL Server only performs a copy-on-write operation to the snapshot database for these pages that are actually changed by the update or delete operation.
