SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You have a two-node failover cluster that is running Windows Server 2008. One of the disk resources is moved from one node to the other. In this scenario, a backup operation on the cluster may fail. When this issue occurs, the following events are logged in the Application log:

Event One

Source: VSS
Event ID: 40961
Task Category: None
Level: Error
Description: ASR Error: Failed to collect critical information for ASR Backup. Reason: Unable to obtain disk information for device number (Win32 error code 0x15).

Event Two

Source: VSS
Event ID: 12290
Task Category: None
Level: Warning
Description: Volume Shadow Copy Service warning: ASR writer Error 0x80070015. hr = 0x00000000.
Operation:
PrepareForBackup event
PrepareForBackup event
Context:
Execution Context: ASR Writer
Execution Context: Writer

Event Three

Source: Microsoft-Windows-Backup
Event ID: 521
Task Category: None
Level: Error
Description: Backup started at 'date' failed as Volume Shadow copy operation failed for backup volumes with following error code '2155348129'. Please rerun backup once issue is resolved.

CAUSE

The backup operation fails because Automated System Recovery (ASR) unnecessarily returns an error for noncritical disks. The expected behavior is that ASR returns an error when critical disks are not available. ASR then logs a Warning event for noncritical disks. However, ASR returns errors when both critical disks and noncritical disks are not available.

Notes
  • Critical disks are disks that are required by the operating system, such as the disks that save the system volume and the boot volume.
  • Noncritical disks are disks that are used to store user data or application data.
