Symptoms

When you build a project that has a very large function in Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1), you receive the following error message:

C1063: compiler limit: compiler stack overflow Internal Compiler Error.

Additionally, the memory usage is unexpectedly high when this problem occurs.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Visual Studio 2005 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Workaround

To work around this problem, simplify the very large function by dividing it into multiple code files.

Note After you apply this hotfix, the optimization feature is turned off when you build a project that has a very large and complex method.
