A Windows Server 2008-based computer that is connected to a storage device over MPIO paths does not restart if the storage device is a boot device, or you lose access to the device if the device is a data volume
Important If you were directed to this Knowledge Base article during the installation of Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2), and received the following error message, you should click Ignore and Continue, and then continue with the installation:
One or more drivers may be incompatible. The driver listed below might be incompatible with Vista Service Pack 2. Check to see if a solution is available, and then restart the installation after the problem is resolved. MSDSM – Please read Microsoft Knowledge Base article 967752.
If you continue to receive the error message during SP2 installation, uninstall the August 2009 Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Application Compatibility Update, and then install Windows Vista Service Pack 2.
To uninstall the August 2009 Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Application Compatibility Update (KB972036), follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Control Panel
.
Click Uninstall a program under the Programs section.
In the Tasks list in the left navigation area, click View installed updates.
Click Update for Microsoft Windows (KB972036), and then click Uninstall.
Note You may have to click View installed updates from the task pane to see the installed updates.
Exit Programs and Features, and then install Windows Vista Service Pack 2.
You are running a Windows Server 2008-based computer that is connected to a storage device over some Microsoft Multipath I/O (MPIO) paths.
A Microsoft MPIO Device Specific Module is enabled for these MPIO paths.
The storage device is configured as an iSCSI boot device or a Storage Area Network (SAN) boot device.
You install and then uninstall Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2.
You have installed hotfix 957316 on the Windows Server 2008-based computer.
In this scenario, the computer does not restart if the storage device is a boot device, or you lose access to the device if the device is a data volume.

How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
To avoid this problem, install hotfix 967752 before you install Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2.
If you have installed Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 and then you uninstalled the service pack or if you have not installed Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2, follow these steps:
For the Data Volume
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
In Registry Editor, locate the following registry subkey:
Unmount the boot volume, and then unmask the LUN from the Windows Server 2008-based computer.
Mask the LUN to the Windows Server 2008-based computer for SAN Boot.
Restart the computer, boot from this LUN.
Note When you install Windows Server 2008 SP2, the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msdsm\Parameters\DsmSupportedDeviceList registry subkey is backed up to the following file:
