Your Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter is incompatible with 802.11n-only routers

Expand all | Collapse all

SYMPTOMS

If you use a wireless router that uses the 802.11n-only protocol together with the Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter, you may experience the following problems:
  • The Xbox 360 console may not "see" the wireless network.
  • The Xbox 360 may be able to "see" the wireless network but cannot obtain an IP address.

CAUSE

The Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter supports the following wireless protocols:
  • 802.11b: This standard has a 2.4-gigahertz (GHz) frequency that provides up to 11-megabits-per-second (Mbps) throughput.
  • 802.11g: This standard has a 2.4-GHz frequency that provides up to 54-Mbps throughput.
  • 802.11a: This standard has a 5.0-GHz frequency that provides up to 54-Mbps throughput.
Note The 802.11n (or "draft N"), wireless protocol is not currently supported by the Xbox Wireless Adapter.

THINGS TO TRY

  • Many 802.11n routers can be configured to use an 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11a "mixed" mode. The Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter should be able to connect to a router that is configured in this manner. See your router's documentation for more information about how to configure the router in this manner.
  • Use a different router that does support the 802.11b, 802.11g, or 802.11a protocol. These standards all work with the Xbox Wireless Network Adapter.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Xbox Live
  • Microsoft XBox 360 Video Game System
  • Microsoft Xbox
