Google Toolbar causes an error message and does not start in Internet Explorer

SYMPTOMS

When you start Windows Internet Explorer 9 or Windows Internet Explorer 8, you receive the following error message:

Google Toolbar add-on can cause Internet Explorer to crash or to stop responding

You may also not be able to use the Google Toolbar add-on.

CAUSE

This error message indicates that the version of Google Toolbar that you have installed is designed to work in an earlier version of Internet Explorer than the version of Internet Explorer that you're using. 

RESOLUTION

Update to the latest Google Toolbar

To update to the latest version of Google Toolbar, click the following button to visit the Google website:

WORKAROUND

Disable the Google Toolbar add-on

To have us disable the Google Toolbar add-on for you, go to the "Fix it for me" section. If you would rather fix this problem yourself, go to the "Let me fix it myself" section.

  1. Close all Internet Explorer windows.
  2. Open a new Internet Explorer window.
  3. When you see the message that states that the "Google Toolbar add-on can cause Internet Explorer to crash or to stop responding," click Always open Internet Explorer without this add-on.
