FIX: You receive asserts after you delete a row that contains BLOB data from a SQL Server 2008 database

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • In a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 database, you delete a row that contains BLOB data. Then, the server performs a database fast recovery.
  • Meanwhile, you insert, update, or delete a row that contains BLOB data in another transaction.
In this scenario, you may receive the following asserts during the recovery:
Assert in Page::CheckInsertSpace in file page.inl @ 1211
Expression: sid >= m_slotCnt || m_slots[-sid].GetOffset () ==0

Assert in PageRef::CheckLoggingMode in file pageref.cpp @ 994
Expression: aPFS.IsPageAllocated (m_buf->bpageno)

Additionally, a minidump file is generated in the SQL Server 2008 log folder.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the log records are not correctly logged for locks when BLOB data is deleted. This causes the data not to be locked during the fast recovery. Therefore, other transactions can update, insert or delete a row that they are not supposed to touch. This causes data corruption.

The release version of SQL Server 2008

Important You must install this cumulative update package if your computer is running the release version of SQL Server 2008.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1.
