Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack (SP2) provides support for host header-based site collection crawls.

In Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, the search function does not work effectively for host header-based site collection crawls. After you install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP2, Windows SharePoint Services will return the information about the host header-based site collection when the search function asks about the farm that contains the site collection.
