This update installs Key Management Service (KMS) 1.2 for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) and for later versions of Windows Server 2003. KMS 1.2 provides support for the following KMS client installations.
Note Not all editions of Windows Server 2003 are supported. Check the "Applies To" section to see a list of editions of Windows Server 2003 that are supported.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.
Installation instructions
To install KMS 1.2, follow these steps.
Note Check whether the edition of Windows Server 2003 that you want to update is supported. To do this, see the "Applies To" section for a list of editions that are supported.

Run the KB968915.exe update file.
Restart the computer.
Note If you do not restart the computer after you install the KB968915.exe file, you may receive the following error message when you enter the product key:
Error: 0xc004f050 The Software Licensing service reported that the product key is invalid

Install and activate the appropriate KMS key from Volume Licensing Service Center:
Note If you are running Windows Server 2003 Web Edition, you may receive the following error message:
Error: 0xC004F068 "The software Licensing Service determined that it is running in a virtual machine. The Key Management Service (KMS) is not supported in this mode"
You must install KMS 1.2 only on one of the products that is listed in the "Applies to" section.
Make sure that the firewall for your computer is configured correctly to enable incoming communication with the KMS host computer through TCP port 1688.
Make sure that the KMS host computer is published by DNS service location (SRV) resource records to enable automatic discovery for KMS client computers.

Key Management Service 1.0 for Windows Server 2003 or Key Management Service 1.1 for Windows Server 2003. Please be aware that not all editions of Windows Server 2003 are supported. Check the "Applies To" for the full list of editions that are supported.

You must restart the computer after you apply this update.
