Error message when using Accelerators or Web Slices in Internet Explorer 8: “Internet Explorer cannot display the web page"

You receive an "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page" error message when you do either of the following:  

• Open the preview window of Internet Explorer Accelerators.  The error appears in the Accelerator’s preview window.
• Open the preview window of Internet Explorer Web Slices using an Alternative Display Source, such as the Suggested Sites Web Slice. The error appears in the Web Slice preview window.

You have ruled out network connectivity issues.

Accelerator and Web Slice preview windows will show the “Internet Explorer cannot display the web page” error if you have Google Gears installed.

This is a known issue in Internet Explorer 8.

Google Gears installs a browser helper object add-on to Internet Explorer.
To verify if you have this add-on, follow these steps:

1. From the Tools menu, click Manage Add-ons, and then click Toolbars and Extensions.
2. Look for Google Gears Helper in the list of add-ons; the status will be Enabled.
