SYMPTOMS

When you try to use your Microsoft LifeCam device with AOL Video Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, or Gmail Voice and Video Chat, you have one or more of the following issues:
  • You need help setting up LifeCam with Messenger software.
  • You cannot make a telephone call.
  • You cannot see a contact.
  • You have no video or audio settings.

RESOLUTION

  • When you start a video call, you must close the LifeCam window to stream video through the instant messaging program. Until you close the LifeCam window, it will continue to stream video instead of providing it to the instant messaging program.
  • Broadband Internet access is required.
  • The registered age for the user and the contact should be above the minimum age that is required by the messaging service provider.
To resolve the problem for AOL Video Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, or Gmail Voice and Video Chat, see the procedure that pertains to your messaging service. Please note that since these are third-party services, their service and the steps may change at any time.

AOL Video Messenger

In AOL Video Messenger, you can hold a video conversation together with any online friend whose computer has the following components:
  • AOL 9.0 Optimized or a later version
  • A microphone and speaker
  • A compatible Webcam
Note This feature is not supported in AOL 9.0 Optimized LE.

If you have problems when you use your LifeCam device in AOL Video Messenger, you may have to configure AOL Video Messenger. To do this, follow these steps.

Step 1: Adjust the speaker settings for Video Messenger

If the volume is too high or too low when you watch a video clip, you can adjust the speaker volume setting. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the toolbar in the IM window, click the Start AOL Video Messenger Session icon.
  2. In the Video Messenger window, click Audio and Video Settings.
  3. Click the Speakers tab.
  4. Adjust the sliding bar to set the speaker volume.
  5. Click Save.

Step 2: Adjust the microphone settings for Video Messenger

If your friend cannot hear you, or if you receive feedback from the microphone, you can adjust the microphone volume setting. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the toolbar in the IM window, click the Start AOL Video Messenger Session icon.
  2. In the Video Messenger window, click Audio and Video Settings.
  3. Click the Microphone tab.
  4. If you have more than one microphone, select the microphone that you want to use from the list.
  5. Adjust the sliding bar to set the microphone volume.
  6. Click Save.

Step 3: Adjust the camera settings for Video Messenger

If your images are too dark, or if the image colors are incorrect, you can adjust these settings to help your images display better. To adjust the camera settings, follow these steps:
  1. On the toolbar in the IM window, click the Start AOL Video Messenger Session icon.
  2. In the Video Messenger window, click Audio and Video Settings.
  3. Click the Camera tab.
  4. If you have more than one camera or video capture device attached to the computer, select the device that you want to use from the list.
  5. Adjust the contrast and brightness settings.
  6. Click Save.

Step 4: Start a Video Messenger session

AOL provides a set of Fun Clips video clips. If you do not have a Webcam, you can still send a Fun Clips video clip to other people. However, you must have a camera to run a live video session.

To start a conversation in a live video session, follow these steps:
  1. Start an IM conversation together with an online friend who uses AOL 9.0 Optimized or a later version.
  2. When you receive a response to your IM request, click the Video button on the IM window toolbar to invite your online friend to join the AOL Video Messenger session.
Note The Video button has a video camera image.
  3. When you are prompted to continue the session, click Yes in the message window.

Note If you do not want to see this message every time that you start a Video Messenger session, click to select the Do not show this message again check box, and then click OK.
If you and your online friend both agree to continue the session, and if a direct connection is established, the Video Messenger window opens. This window lets you send and receive video messages.

The AOL Video Messenger session occurs in an extension that opens in the IM window. The video clips play in this area. You and your online friend use the screen controls to record and send up to 20 seconds of video and voice at a time. The controls resemble those on a standard video camera.

Gmail Voice and Video Chat

To use your LifeCam device in Gmail Voice and Video Chat, you must install Gmail Voice and Video Chat. To do this, please visit the following Gmail Web site:
http://mail.google.com/videochat
To start Gmail Voice and Video Chat, follow these steps:
  1. Sign in to Gmail.
  2. In the Chat section of Gmail, select the contact whom you want to call.

    Notes
    • If your contact has a camera icon next to their name, you can make a voice or video call to that person. To do this, click Video & More.
    • If your contact does not have a camera next to their name in your chat list, you can invite that person to download the Gmail Voice And Video Chat plug-in from the Video & More menu in a chat window.
Note Even if a contact does not have a video camera, you can still connect to that person through a voice chat or through a one-way video chat.
  3. On the Video & More tab, click Start Video Chat or click Start Audio Chat.
Note When you start a session, Gmail opens a video or audio window on your screen, and sends an invitation to your contact to accept.
  4. When the contact receives the invitation, they hear a ringing sound, and they see an invitation to connect the call. Ask them to click Answer to connect. Otherwise, they can click Ignore.
  5. To separate Video and Audio Chat from your Gmail window into its own window, click the Video & More tab, and then click Pop-Out.
  6. If you want to expand the size of the video screen to cover the whole height and width of your monitor, press the full-screen image in the upper-left corner of the video or audio window.
If you have problems when you use LifeCam to call your contacts, consider the following LifeCam conditions:
  • Video calls can be made only between Gmail chat users who use a browser that is enabled for the Gmail Voice and Video Chat plug-in.
  • Both users must have the Gmail Voice and Video Chat plug-in installed. To download and install this plug-in, follow these steps:
    1. Click Video & More or click Options at the bottom of a chat window.
    2. On this menu, click Add voice/video chat.
    3. Follow the instructions.
  • Both users must be signed in to Gmail.
  • You should close any other applications that use LifeCam.
  • Contacts are unavailable to receive calls if they do either of the following:
    • Access Chat by using non-Google IM clients and services
    • Sign in by using the Google Talk Gadget instead of by using the Gmail Chat feature
To test whether your microphone, speakers, and Webcam work correctly with Gmail Voice And Video Chat, follow these steps:
  1. Click Settings at the upper-right corner of your Gmail account.
  2. Click the Chat tab.
  3. In the Voice and Video Chat section, click the menus for your camera, microphone, and speakers one at a time.
  4. On each menu, adjust the selections.
  5. Verify that the microphone is receiving sound, and that your speakers can play the test sound.
  6. In the Gmail control panel, set Microphone as the Default Recording Device.
Notes
  • If you experience poor video quality during a call, make sure that no other program is trying to use your Webcam. You can close all other open applications or downloads to try to improve the quality of your video connection.
  • If your Webcam is plugged into a USB hub, try plugging your Webcam directly into your computer.
  • Your call quality may be impaired if you use any of the following:
    • A DSL modem that has a slow uplink
    • A 3G wireless modem
    • A network that uses proxies to make video calls

About AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) in Gmail

Gmail chat offers the option to sign in to your AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) account to chat together with your AIM buddies from Gmail. When you do this, your AIM buddies populate your Contacts list. Your AIM contacts are searchable exactly like your Google Talk contacts.

If you do not see the AIM option in Gmail, make sure that your language choice is set to English (US), and that you are using the latest version of Gmail.
Note You must have an AIM account to use this feature.
