How do I enable User Account Control in Windows Vista?

Problem description

This article helps you enable the User Account Control (UAC) feature in Windows Vista.

To have us enable the UAC feature for you, go to the "Fix it for me" section. To enable the UAC feature yourself, go to the "Let me fix it myself" section.

Fix it for me

To enable the UAC feature automatically, click the Fix it button or link. Click Run in the File Download dialog box, and then follow the steps in the Fix it wizard.

Note If you are not on the computer that has the problem, you can save the automatic fix to a flash drive or to a CD, and then you can run it on the computer that has the problem.

To enable the UAC feature, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Use User Accounts to enable User Account Control

  1. Open User Accounts. To do this, click

  2. Click Turn User Account Control on or off.

    If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
  3. Click to select the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer check box, and then click OK.
  4. Restart the computer.

Method 2: Use the System Configuration Utility to enable User Account Control

  1. Open User Accounts. To do this, click

    , type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then click msconfig.exe in the Programs list.

  2. On the Tools tab, click Enable UAC, and then click Launch.
  3. Close the Command Prompt window, and then restart the computer.
