Symptom

Consider the following scenario.  You have a system running Windows Server 2008, and this system has two Dynamic Disks containing a Boot volume (or Boot and System volume) that is being software mirrored by Windows.

You remove the disk containing the secondary plex of the mirrored boot volume from the system.  Then, you restart the system.  When the Boot Manager appears, you notice there still exists a BCD entry for the secondary plex of the boot mirror, though the secondary plex has been removed from the system.

Additionally, if you subsequently add the disk containing the secondary plex to the system, the original entry for the secondary plex is no longer functional, but an additional BCD entry for the secondary plex is added to the BCD store.  This additional entry for the secondary plex will have "- secondary plex" appended to the end of the name of the original secondary plex entry.  For example, "Windows Server 2008 - secondary plex - secondary plex."

Cause

The behavior described in the Symptom section occurs because the BCD entry for the secondary mirror plex is not automatically removed from the BCD store when the disk containing the secondary plex is removed from the system.

Resolution

If the boot mirror is broken prior to removing the disk containing the secondary plex from the system, this behavior will not be seen.

If you are already seeing this issue, and have a non-working entry for the secondary plex in the BCD store, use the bcdedit /delete {GUID} command to remove the extra, non-working entry from the BCD store.

If there is a working entry for the secondary mirror plex with a description similar to "Windows Server 2008 - secondary plex - secondary plex," use the bcdedit /set {GUID} description command to rename the entry to something more descriptive, such as "Windows Server 2008 - secondary plex."
