"Your 30-day trial is active" message displayed when you start a retail copy of Office 2008 for Mac

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have the Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac trial edition installed.
  • You install a retail copy of Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac.
  • You try to start the retail copy of Office 2008 for Mac.
In this scenario, you receive an Office 2008 for Mac trial edition dialog box that states the following:
Thank you for trying Office 2008. Your 30-day trial is active.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you did not uninstall the Office 2008 for Mac trial edition before you install a retail copy of Office 2008 for Mac. You must uninstall Office 2008 trial.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, uninstall the Office 2008 for Mac trial edition, and then reinstall the retail copy of Office 2008 for Mac.

To do this, follow these steps:

Step 1: Quit all applications

To quit active applications, follow these steps:
  1. On the Apple menu, click Force Quit.
  2. Select an application in the "Force Quit Applications" window.
    Note You cannot quit Finder.
  3. Click Force Quit.

4. Repeat the previous steps until you quit all active applications.


Warning When an application is force quit, any unsaved changes to open documents are not saved.

Step 2: Uninstall Office 2008 Trial Edition
  1. On the Go menu, click Applications.
  2. Open the Microsoft Office folder. 
    Note If you saved any documents in the Microsoft Office folder, move them to another location.
  3. In the Microsoft Office folder, open Additional Tools/Remove Office, double-click the Remove Office icon, and then follow the instructions.
  4. On the Go menu, click Home
  5. Open Library.
    Note The Library folder is hidden in Mac OS X Lion. To display this folder, hold down the OPTION key while you click the Go menu.
     
  6. Open Preferences, open Microsoft, and then open Office 2008
  7. Click Microsoft Office 2008 Settings.plist file to select it and then click Move to Trash on the File menu.
  8. Reinstall your retail copy of Office 2008 for Mac
If you have downloaded the retail copy from the web (Mactopia web site), press and hold the Control + Option keys on the keyboard (Press Control + ALT if you are using non-Apple keyboard) then click on any of the Office applications. It will bring up the "Change the License for Microsoft Office" window. Enter the product key provided to you in the "Order Confirmation" email received from customerservice.us@

Step 3: Remove Office 2008 manually
