Symptom



SQL server 2008 setup may fail with the following error message



Setup Failure in SetupActionName: gatherusersettings

Cause



These symptoms may be the result of registry corruption on the machine where SQL is being installed. The registry corruption may have been caused by a failure of a previous installation attempt of SQL server on the same machine.

Resolution



Use one of the following options to resolve this issue:



Option 1:



Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

 

1.     Copy the checksum, Edition and Editiontype values along with their data from the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Setup to the following two registry keys:

·          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.<instance name>\Setup   

·          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS10.<instance name>\Setup

2.     Rerun the setup for SQL Server 2008 instance.



Option 2:

1.     Rerun the setup to uninstall the failed instance completely. Rerun the setup once again to install the SQL server instance.
