A hotfix is available to update the Daylight Saving Time for the "(GMT +5:00) Islamabad, Karachi" time zone for the year 2009 for Windows XP-based, Windows Server 2003-based, Windows Vista-based and Windows Server 2008-based computers

As reported in various publications around the world, Pakistan has announced the start of DST for 2009 on April 15th at midnight. This information is subject to change as it has not been officially confirmed by a Pakistani government source. This optional hotfix updates the start of Daylight Savings Time (DST) for Pakistan in 2009 according to those reports. The clock will move one hour forward at midnight between April 14 and April 15, and then move one hour back at midnight between October 31 and November 1 in 2009. There was no DST for Pakistan in 2009 prior to this announcement.

More specifically, this article sets DST for Pakistan as follows:

• DST starts at 23:59:59 on April 14, 2009
• DST ends at 23:59:59 on October 31, 2009

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Notes

• An updated fix for Windows Vista that also works with Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) is now available and can be installed via this knowledge base article. Users can either install the new fix now directly from this article with no need to uninstall the previous version of the hotfix. Alternatively, users can install this hotfix immediately after upgrading to Windows Vista SP2.
• For users with Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows XP Service Pack 3 and users with Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2:
  • If the December 2008 DST cumulative update 955839 is installed on the computer, then the following time zone is modified by this update to start and end DST for 2009 on the dates and time that are mentioned in the "Symptoms" section for this time zone.

  • If the December 2008 DST cumulative update 955839 is not installed before you apply this hotfix, the recommendation is to apply 955839 first and then apply this update. If you decide not to install 955839 before you apply this update, then the following two Time Zones for Pakistan will appear on the computer. Please choose the second time zone which is set to start and end DST for 2009 on the dates and time that are mentioned in the "Symptoms" section for this time zone.
