FIX: Error message when you process the index for a partition in a cube in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services: "Internal error: An unexpected error occurred (file 'pffilestorefilegroup.cpp', line 1483, function 'PFFileStoreGroup::ReadPage')"

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You create a partition in a cube in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services.
  • You store a fact table in a single 65-kilobyte data segment of the partition.
  • You add one or more columns to the fact table. You add a large positive number and a large negative number in the same column.
  • You process the index for the partition.
In this scenario, you receive the following error message:
Internal error: An unexpected error occurred (file 'pffilestorefilegroup.cpp', line 1483, function 'PFFileStoreGroup::ReadPage')


Note Successive attempts to process the index will also fail until ProcessData is run on the partition.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because there is a bug in the way that Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services compresses floating-point numbers when it processes the index of a partition. When SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services computes the range for a column, an overflow error occurs if the column contains one large positive number and one large negative number.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.
