SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario in Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR:
  • You have a table that contains an extended property in a column in a database project.
  • You deploy the project to a database.
  • In the Schema View, you right-click the table and select the Refactor item. Then, you rename the table.
In this scenario, you cannot redeploy the project and you receive an error message that resembles the following:

Creating dbo.Tablename.columnname.extended property name'...
<Projectname>.dbschema(0,0)Error TSD01268: .Net SqlClient Data Provider: Msg 15233, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_addextendedproperty, Line 37 Property cannot be added. Property 'extended property name' already exists for 'dbo.Tablename.columnname.
An error occurred while the batch was being executed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the refactoring contributor does not change the name of the hierarchical child of a composed child, even if the refactoring contributor changes the name of composed children or hierarchical children. Therefore, the incremental deployment operation tries to re-create the extended property.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, upgrade to Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR R2. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
