SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • In the Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR IDE, you use a limited account that has no permission to access a master database.
  • You import the master database to a server project.
  • You create a composite database project that adds a reference to the server project. These two projects are part of the same solution.
  • On the Data menu, you click Schema Compare.
  • You set the composite database project as the Source Schema and the master database as the Target Schema, and then you click OK.
In this scenario, the Visual Studio IDE crashes.

CAUSE

When you perform the Schema Compare operation, the server model must be imported and added to the database model. However, in this scenario, your account does not have permission to read the master database definitions. Therefore, a DeploymentFailedException exception is thrown, and this causes the Visual Studio IDE to crash.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, upgrade to Microsoft Visual Studio Team System 2008 Database Edition GDR R2. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
