-OR-

When you click the Spelling & Grammar button in the Proofing group on the Review tab in Word 2007, one of the following messages is displayed:
  • "The spelling and grammar check is complete."
  • "Proofing Tools are not installed for <default language>, try re-installing proofing tools."

Cause

There are several reasons why this issue may occur:
  • The add-in Speller EN-US is disabled.
  • The following entry is in the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\ProofingTools\1.0\Override\en-US
  • The 'Do not check spelling or grammar' check box is selected.
  • The proofing tools are not installed.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, try the methods listed below. Start with Method 1. If the registry key is not on the system or if the problem remains, try Method 2 & test again & continue through the list until the spell checker works.

Method 1

Enable the Speller EN-US add-in using these steps:
  1. Click the Office Button, then click Word Options.
  2. On the left, Click Add-Ins.
  3. At the bottom, see Manage: COM Add-ins. Click on COM Add-ins and then from the drop down menu select Disabled items. Then click on Go.
  4. In the Disabled Items window, the Addin: Speller EN-US (nlsdata0009.dll) would be listed.
  5. Click on it, then click the Enable button.

Method 2

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.
