Description of the hotfix rollup package for System Center Data Protection Manager 2007: June 4, 2009

This article describes the Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2007 issues that are fixed in the Data Protection Manager 2007 hotfix rollup package that is dated June 4, 2009.

This rollup addresses the following issues.

Issue 1
If you enable library sharing, you cannot delete a protection group, and you receive the following error message:Issue 2
The SharePoint backup process fails if DPM 2007 cannot back up a content database. If you install this update, the SharePoint backup process will finish. However, an alert will be raised if DPM 2007 cannot back up a content database.

Issue 3
DPM 2007 jobs randomly fail. In the administrator console, you see error code 0x800706BA if you check the detailed information about the failed job.
Issue 4
DPM 2007 does not delete directories that are no longer being protected from the replica volume.

Issue 5
DPM 2007 performs a Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) full backup. Because the transaction logs are deleted when the DPM 2007 backup job is completed, this backup may interfere with other applications that are backing up transactional applications such as Microsoft SQL Server or Microsoft Exchange.

After you install this update rollup, you can configure DPM 2007 to perform VSS copy backup. This means that the application transaction logs will not be deleted when the DPM 2007 backup job is finished.

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. To configure DPM 2007 to perform VSS copy backup, add the following CopyBackupEnabled registry value under the following registry subkey:Registry value: CopyBackupEnabled
Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 1

Issue 6
Reconciling a VSS shadow copy causes the DPM 2007 service to crash.

Issue 7
The DPM 2007 service crashes if a tape backup job is canceled during the CheckConcurrencyBlock operation.

Issue 8
The Pruneshadowcopies.ps1 script cannot delete expired recovery points.

Issue 9
If a parent backup job of a SharePoint farm fails, but the child backup succeeds, the DPM 2007 service crashes.

You do not have to restart your computer after you apply this hotfix.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Installation instructions

This Data Protection Manager 2007 rollup package consists of three separate updates. To install each update, follow these steps:

1. Install the rollup package on the server that is running Data Protection Manager 2007 Service Pack 1. To do this, run the DataProtectionManager2007-KB970867.exe file on the server.
   
   Note You may have to restart the computer if you have not previously installed update rollup 968579 or if the DPM Administrator Console or DPM Management Shell is open when you install the rollup.
   
   The rollup package will not be installed if there is insufficient disk space to back up the DPM SQL Server database. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

2. Update the remote Microsoft SQL Server installation that is hosting the DPMDB database. To do this, run the SqlPrep-KB970867.msp file on the computer that is running SQL Server.
   
   Note This step is not required if you are running a SQL DPMDB instance on the Data Protection Manager 2007 server.
3. In the DPM Administrator Console, update the protection agents. To do this, use one of the following methods:
   • Method 1: Update the protection agents from the DPM Administrator Console
     1. Open the DPM Administrator Console.
     2. Click the Management tab, and then click the Agents tab.
     3. Select a computer from the Protected Computer list, and then click Update on the Action pane.
     4. Click Yes, and then click Update Agents.
     5. When you receive the Enter Credentials and Reboot option dialog box, enter your credentials, select the Manually restart the selected servers later option, and then click OK.
        
        Note You do not have to restart the computer to update the agent. This is why the Manually restart the selected servers later option was selected.
   • Method 2: Update the protection agents on the protected computers
     1. Obtain the update protection agent package from the Data Protection Manager installation location \DPM\Agents\RA\2.0.8844.0 directory on the Data Protection Manager 2007 server.
        • x86 update
          i386\1033\DPMAgentInstaller_KB970867.exe
        • x64 update
          amd64\1033\DPMAgentInstaller_KB970867_AMD64.exe
        
        Note The DPMAgentInstaller.exe package applies to all languages.
     2. Run the appropriate DPMAgentInstaller.exe package on each protected computer.
     3. Open the DPM Administrator Console on the Data Protection Manager 2007 server.
     4. Click the Management tab, and then click the Agents tab.
     5. Select the protected computers, and then verify that the agent version is listed as 2.0.8844.0.
4. Run the DPMManagementShell2007-KB970867.msp file.
   
   Note This step is not required if you are running the Data Protection Manager Management Shell on the Data Protection Manager 2007 server.
