TIFF documents are corrupted when you rotate them in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer on a computer that is running Windows XP SP3

SYMPTOMS

Considering the following scenario:

You have a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3).
You open a TIFF document by using Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.
You rotate the TIFF document either clockwise or counterclockwise.

In this scenario, the TIFF image becomes a garbage image on the screen, and the file is corrupted on the hard disk.

Notes

This problem only occurs to a TIFF document that is compressed in CCITT Group 3 format with 2D encoding.
This problem does not occur if the TIFF document is set to read-only.
When you use the Copy to feature in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer to save another copy of the TIFF document, the saved copy is also corrupted. However, the original file is not affected.

When a TIFF image is rotated in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, the image is outputted. Then, the image is recompressed again.

This problem occurs because Windows Picture and Fax Viewer outputs a TIFF file in CCITT Group 3 format with 1D encoding. Therefore, when Windows Picture and Fax Viewer opens a TIFF file in CCITT Group 3 format with 2D encoding, the file is corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install the following hotfix. After you install this hotfix, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is able to save a TIFF file in the correct format and encoding. However, it does not recover previously corrupted TIFF files.

You must restart your computer if the affected Shimgvw.dll file is being used when you apply this hotfix.
