Symptoms

After you have installed the Print Server role service on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008, you can use only an administrator user account to perform certain tasks that are related to printing. These tasks include the installation of local print queues, of local print ports, and of local printer drivers.

Cause

A hard-coded check prevents domain users from using most of the tasks that are related to printing.

Resolution

After you install this hotfix, you have a new
Security tab in the Print Server properties. On this
Security tab, you can use the Administrator account to assign the domain user permission to perform the tasks that are related to printing. There are several limitations after this hotfix is installed. These limitations include the following:

  • A delegated user can install only those print drivers that are already in the driver store.

  • A delegated user cannot install a print driver from the driver store remotely.

  • A delegated user cannot install a print driver from the driver store in a clustered spooler.

  • A delegated user cannot install a print queue remotely and cannot add a printer remotely from a computer that is running Windows XP.

Note If the delegated user uses a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Vista, the delegated user can install a print queue remotely and can add a printer remotely.

Note By default, a delegated user does not have permission to manage the printers that are installed on the print server. However, after you assign a delegated user permission to the print server, that user does not require additional permission to manage any printers that are added later.
