A computer that is running Windows XP SP3 cannot authenticate a wireless router that uses the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) when the router is configured to use Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)Article ID: 971455 - View products that this article applies to. You try to configure the security setting on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) by using the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) technology. In this scenario, the computer cannot authenticate the WPS router because the router is configured to use Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP). CauseThis problem occurs because Windows XP SP3 mistakenly tries to authenticate a WEP-configured device by using 802.1X authentication. Therefore, the authentication fails. ResolutionHotfix informationA supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article.
