Unable to connect a 64-bit-based computer to a Networked printer installed on a Windows Home Server

When attempting to connect a Windows 64-bit computer to a network printer on a Windows Home Server you may receive an error similar to the following:

“Driver not found”

Additionally, when attempting to install the 64-bit driver to the Windows Home Server you may receive a message stating that the technology does not support the 64 bit driver.

Cause



This issue can occur if you are attempting to connect to a shared printer on a Windows Home Server from a 64-bit computer and attempt to install the 64-bit printer drivers from that Windows Home Server shared printer.

 

Windows Home Server does not support the installation of 64-bit drivers.

Resolution



To resolve this issue install the printer driver to the 64-bit computer when connecting to the printer by follow the steps listed below:

    1. Click Start, Printers, Add a Printer

    2. Click Add a Local Printer

    3. Select Create a new port and ensure that Local Port is selected and click Next

    4. In the Enter a port name box type the server name\printer name  and clock OK

Example: \\HomeServer\LaserPrinter

    5. Install the print driver for your printer from the presented list or click Have Disk and browse to the installation media or the location of the latest downloaded printer driver files

    6. Follow the printer driver instructions and then print a test page to verify the installation.

If the above steps do not resolve the issue you should attempt to install the driver to the 64-bit computer using the printers installation media or download and install the latest 64-bit driver for your printer and then attempt to connect to the network printer.
