Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • In Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services, you design an Analysis Services project in Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS).
  • You define a referenced dimension relationship for a measure group in a cube. You click to select the Materialize check box when you define the referenced dimension relationship.
  • You make a change to a calculation script command, and then you save the change. For example, you add a space to the calculation script command, and then you save the change.
In this scenario, when you process a partition in the measure group, you receive the following error message:

Errors in the high-level relational engine. The binding for the 'ColumnName' column is not a ColumnBinding type.

RESOLUTION

The fix for this issue was first released in Cumulative Update 3 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. For more information about this cumulative update package, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
971491 Cumulative update package 3 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1
Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release. Microsoft recommends that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:
  • Restart the Analysis Services service after you save any changes to the calculation script, and then process the partition.
  • Process the whole cube or the whole database.
  • Process the partition by using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
  • If you have previously deployed the Analysis Services database to a server, you can open the database from the server in BIDS instead of opening it from the project. After you open the database from the server in BIDS, you can change the calculation script, and then you can process the partition successfully. To open the database from the server in BIDS, point to Open on the File menu, and then click Analysis Service Database.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
