FIX: The LLMNR resolver does not work on host name resolution when a Windows Embedded CE 6.0-based device connects to an IPv6 network which has an enabled DNS server

SYMPTOMS

On a Windows Embedded CE 6.0-based device consider the following scenario:
  • You specify the order of name resolution resolvers by setting the NameResolutionOrdering registry entry under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\AFD registry subkey.
  • You connect the device to an IPv6 network that has an enabled Domain Name System (DNS) server.
In this scenario, when the DNS resolver cannot resolve a host name successfully, the Link Local Multicast Name Resolution (LLMNR) resolver does not continue to work as expected.

Note This problem does not occur if you disable the DNS server in the network.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Windows Embedded CE 6.0 device skips the LLMNR and Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) queries when the DNS server responds to the name resolution request.

RESOLUTION

Software update information

A supported software update is now available from Microsoft as Windows CE 6.0 Platform Builder Monthly Update (June 2009). You can confirm this by scrolling to the "File information" section of this article. The package file name contains the product version, date, Knowledge Base article number, and processor type. The package file name format is:
Product version-yymmdd-kbnnnnnn-processor type
For example: Wincepb50-060503-kb917590-armv4i.msi is the ARMV4i Windows CE 5.0 Platform Builder fix that is documented in KB article 917590 and that is contained in the May 2006 monthly update. To resolve this problem immediately, click the following article number for information about obtaining Windows CE Platform Builder and core operating system software updates:
837392  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837392/ ) How to locate core operating system fixes for Microsoft Windows CE Platform Builder products
After you install the update, the DnsManagedNet registry entry is added under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\AFD registry subkey. The registry type is REG_DWORD. If you set the registry value to zero, the LLMNR protocol can be used to resolve a computer host name even if an enabled DNS server cannot resolve the name.

Prerequisites

This update is supported only if all previously issued updates for this product have also been installed.

Restart requirement

After you apply this software update, you must perform a clean build of the whole platform. To do this, use one of the following methods:
  • On the Build menu, click Clean, and then click Build Platform
  • On the Build menu, click Rebuild Platform.
You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this software update.

Update replacement information

This update does not replace any other updates.
