FIX: The Host Integration Server 2009 Configuration tool does not update any features that were already configured when you perform an unattended configuration

SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Microsoft Host Integration Server 2009, you use the Configuration tool (Configuration.exe) to perform unattended configurations at a command prompt. Then, Host Integration Server features that were already configured are not updated. Therefore, any new configuration changes that are specified in the Host Integration Server configuration XML file for features that were already configured will not be implemented.

The following is one example of how this problem can be observed:

Configuration /s configuration XML file /l log file

Note The configuration XML file placeholder represents the path and the file name of the Host Integration Server 2009 configuration file (for example, C:\HIS2009_Server_Config.xml).

The configuration XML file that is specified in the command contains the updated password for the Host Integration Server service account, together with any other configuration changes that have to be made to the Host Integration Server configuration.

After the Configuration.exe command finishes, you will find that the Host Integration Server services cannot start because of a logon error. The error occurs because the Configuration tool cannot update the service account password.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

After you apply this hotfix, the Host Integration Server 2009 Configuration tool will update Host Integration Server features that were already configured when you perform unattended configurations. The Configuration tool will try to stop and restart the SnaBase service, and the other Host Integration Server services that depend on the SnaBase service, at the end of the unattended configuration process. Therefore, an unattended configuration should not be performed if users are connected to Host Integration Server, because they will lose their sessions when the services are restarted.

The following are some things to be aware of after you apply this hotfix to a Host Integration Server 2009 system:

The SNA DDM service may not restart at the end of the configuration process. If this occurs, this service may have to be started manually if it is configured for Automatic startup in the Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
If the unattended configuration process fails for any reason, the SNA RPC and SNA MngAgent services may stop even though the SnaBase service was not stopped. These services may have to be manually restarted after the failed configuration process.
If any of the Host Integration Server services that depend on the SnaBase service cannot be stopped by the Configuration tool during the configuration process, the SnaBase service cannot stop. In this case, you have to manually stop and restart the SnaBase service and any other Host Integration Servers that must be running in order to enable the new configuration changes.
If Host Integration Server 2009 is uninstalled after this hotfix is installed, the program listing for this hotfix is not removed from the list of installed updates in Add or Remove Programs on Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP, or in Programs and Features on Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.
