This problem occurs when Microsoft Excel 2008, Microsoft Word 2008, or Microsoft PowerPoint 2008 cannot determine the precise version of the Open XML standard that was used to create the file.
To work around this issue, first download and install any available updates for Office 2008 for Mac by using the Microsoft AutoUpdate.
Note To use Microsoft AutoUpdate, click Check for Updates on the Help menu in any Microsoft Office program. If updates do not resolve the issue, you can re-create or save the Excel workbook, Word document, or PowerPoint presentation in a file format other than Open XML. In May 2008, Microsoft defined a road map for the implementation of the ratified International Standard ISO/IEC 29500 (Office Open XML). Additionally, Microsoft announced that future Microsoft Office products would incorporate changes that are made by the standard’s governing body over time. Therefore, Excel workbooks, Word documents, and PowerPoint presentations can now be written by other companies by using the ISO/IEC 29500 standard.
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Service Pack 2 (SP2) has implemented many of the requirements of the ISO/IEC 29500 standard. However, Office 2008 programs may not read all files that use the ISO standard.
Future updates to Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 may become available to enable files that are written to the strict ISO standard to be opened in Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac.
