FIX: The DNS name resolution fails on a Windows Embedded CE 6.0-based device when the device has a Bluetooth PAN network adapter that is enabled automatically and uses a static IP address

Consider the following scenario:

• You have a Bluetooth Personal Area Network (PAN) network adapter and another network adapter in a Windows Embedded CE 6.0-based device.
• You configure the Bluetooth PAN network adapter to be enabled automatically and use a static IP address when the device starts.
• You try to perform a Domain Name System (DNS) name resolution. For example, you ping a host name.

In this scenario, the name cannot be resolved even if the other network adapter has an active connection with the network.

This problem occurs because of a failure that occurs when the socket for the Bluetooth interface initializes. Therefore, the name resolution code ends the query instead of using the other available interface.

Software update information

A supported software update is now available from Microsoft as Windows CE 6.0 Platform Builder Monthly Update (June 2009). You can confirm this by scrolling to the "File information" section of this article. The package file name contains the product version, date, Knowledge Base article number, and processor type. Prerequisites

This update is supported only if all previously issued updates for this product have also been installed.

Restart requirement

After you apply this software update, you must perform a clean build of the whole platform. To do this, use one of the following methods:

• On the Build menu, click Clean, and then click Build Platform.
• On the Build menu, click Rebuild Platform.

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this software update.

Update replacement information

This update does not replace any other updates.

File information

The English version of this software update package has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

To configure the Bluetooth PAN network adapter to be enabled automatically, set the ActivateOnBoot registry value to 1. The registry entry is under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\pan registry subkey.

To configure the Bluetooth PAN network adapter to use a static IP address, set the values of the registry keys under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\BTPAN1\Parms\Tcpip registry subkey as follows:
