FIX: The SQL:BatchCompleted event and the RPC:Completed event displays an incorrect row count when you use SQL Server Profiler to monitor a sp_executesql stored procedure call in Microsoft SQL Server 2008

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release.

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. In Microsoft SQL Server 2008, you use SQL Server Profiler to connect to an instance. You create a trace to monitor a batch execution that contains the sp_executesql stored procedure in SQL Server Profiler. When you run this trace, the SQL:BatchCompleted event or the RPC:Completed event display an incorrect value in the RowCounts column.

For example, assume that you run the following statement:
execute sp_executesql N'insert into t1 values(1)'
go
In this example, in SQL Server Profiler, the value in the RowCounts column of the SQL:BatchCompleted event should be 1. However, the value actually displays 2. If you run the statement by using RPC (Remote Procedure Call), the value in the RowCounts column of the RPC:Completed event appears as 0, where the actual number of rows is 1.

RESOLUTION

The fix for this issue was first released in Cumulative Update 3 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. For more information about this cumulative update package, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Note Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release. Microsoft recommends that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.
