SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario, you have a Microsoft Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2-based device that uses an ARM processor and that has the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 3.5 installed. You attach the Just-In-Time (JIT) debugger to debug a managed application on the device. In this scenario, you receive a "Prefetch Abort" exception.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the managed application's memory usage exceeds 32 MB. In this situation, the computed offset targets an incorrect branch of code to handle the breakpoints.

RESOLUTION

Software update information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

After you install the update, the JITCodeBufferSizeLimitEnabled registry entry is added under the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\.NETCompactFramework
registry subkey. The registry type is DWORD. When the value of the entry is set to 1, the application memory is limited to 32 MB.
