SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You set up a virtual private network (VPN) connection on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.
  • In the VPN connection properties dialog box, you select Protected EAP (PEAP) (encryption enabled) as the authentication method, and you select Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP) as the VPN type.
  • You try to create a new VPN connection by using a smart card. In your first attempt to do this, you enter an incorrect personal identification number (PIN). Then a dialog box prompts you to enter the correct PIN.
In this scenario, the dialog box repeatedly prompts you to enter the correct PIN after you have already entered the correct PIN. Additionally, after you make repeated attempts to enter the PIN, the smart card is blocked, and you cannot access any corporate resources. Also, you have to contact IT support at your company to unblock the smart card.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol (PEAP) method of authentication does not use the PIN that is entered in the retry attempt even if you enter the correct PIN in the retry attempt.
