Description of the Outlook 2003 hotfix package (Outlooknminus1.msp): September 23, 2009

This article describes the Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 issue that is fixed in the hotfix package that is dated September 23, 2009.

Issue that this hotfix package fixes

On a computer that has Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed, external content is always blocked for attached e-mail messages after you install security update 949031 (security bulletin MS08-015).

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

To install this hotfix, you must have Office 2003 SP2 installed.

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Registry information

To resolve this problem, you must configure the DisableSenderTypeSecurity registry entry after you install the hotfix package. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start Registry Editor. To do this, use one of the following methods, as appropriate for your operating system.
   • In Windows Vista, click Start

     If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.
   • In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
   HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Preferences
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
4. Type DisableSenderTypeSecurity, and then press ENTER.
5. Right-click DisableSenderTypeSecurity, and then click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
7. Exit Registry Editor.

Note If the sender of the attached e-mail message that has the blocked content is not someone from your own organization, the content may still be blocked. Therefore, you have to add the domain name of the sender if you want Outlook to automatically display the blocked content in the attached e-mail message.

The global version of this hotfix package uses a Microsoft Windows Installer package to install the hotfix package. The dates and the times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) in the following table. When you view the file information, the date is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Hotfix information

Note For most external content, Outlook checks the sender type of e-mail messages to determine whether to display the content. E-mail messages from an internal sender are considered safe. Therefore, all external content that comes from an internal sender is allowed. Security update 949031 changes this behavior for attached e-mail messages and for e-mail messages that are based on a file system. When security update 949031 is applied, external content is blocked regardless of the sender type. When you install hotfix 975123 and then configure the DisableSenderTypeSecurity registry entry, Outlook can now check the sender type. Therefore, when you set the value of the DisableSenderTypeSecurity registry entry, Outlook checks the sender type and determines whether you can view external content for attached e-mail messages.
