An End-User Defined Character (EUDC) font that was created in Windows XP cannot be deployed to a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

Consider the following scenario:

• You are running a Windows XP-based computer.
• You create an End-User Defined Character (EUDC) font.
• You deploy the EUDC font to a Windows 7-based computer or to a Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer.

In this scenario, you can enter the EUDC characters by using a phonetic Input Method Editor (IME), such as Pinyin IME. However, you cannot enter the EUDC characters by using the Changjie IME.

This issue occurs because the format of EUDC-related files in Windows XP differs from the format of EUDC-related files in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2. Therefore, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 cannot recognize the EUDC-related files that were created in Windows XP.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Pinyin IME is a phonetic IME. In Pinyin IME, keyboard entries represent the sounds Mandarin. Changjie IME is a visual input method. In Changjie, keyboard entries represent strokes.
