Symptoms

On a computer that is running Windows Server 2008, you receive the following error message when you try to install the DNS server role with the Dcrpromo.exe tool:

Attempt to install DNS server failed with error code 0x80070643. Fatal error during installation.

Cause

This problem occurs because the installation of the DNS server role is not successful if no network adapters are given IP addresses. Component-Based Servicing requires that the DNS Server service starts during the DNS server role installation process. By design, the DNS Server service cannot start if there is no network connectivity. Therefore, the DNS server role installation fails.

Note After you install the hotfix that is described in this article, this restriction is removed.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, apply this hotfix by using following steps:

  1. Expand the Msu file by using the Expand.exe utility. For example:

    expand –f: Windows6.0-KB971347-x86.cab “C:\Windows6.0-KB975654-x86.msu” %TEMP%

For more information about the expand command-line options, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc722332(WS.10).aspx

  2. Use the Pkgmgr utility to install the .cab file that is extracted from the Msu file. For example:

    Start /w pkgmgr /ip /m:%TEMP%\Windows6.0-KB975654-x86.cab

For more information about Package Manager (Pkgmgr.exe) technical reference, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
