SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the Failover Clustering feature on a computer that is running a non-English version of Windows Server 2008.
  • Some Cluster-related event entries are added to the System log.
  • You analyze the Cluster log by using the time stamps for the event entries that are added to the System log.
In this scenario, you cannot locate the expected log entries by using the time stamps for the event entries that are added to the System log. If you compare the time stamps in the Cluster log with the time stamps for the related event entries that are in the System log, you find that the time stamps are different.

CAUSE

When the CprepSrv.exe process records a time stamp in the Cluster log, the process incorrectly performs a string comparison between a localized string and an English character string. This behavior causes the CprepSrv.exe process to retrieve the QueryPerformanceCounter function-based time from Event Tracing for Windows. However, the QueryPerformanceCounter function-based time is less accurate compared to the system time of most computers. Therefore, the issue occurs.

Windows Server 2008 file information notes
  • The files that apply to a specific product, SR_Level (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table.
    Collapse this tableExpand this table
    VersionProductSR_LevelService branch
    6.0.600 1 . 22xxxWindows Server 2008SP1LDR
    6.0.600 2 . 22xxxWindows Server 2008SP2LDR
  • Service Pack 1 is integrated into the release version of Windows Server 2008. Therefore, RTM milestone files apply only to Windows Vista. RTM milestone files have a 6.0.0000.xxxxxx version number.
  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintaining the state of the updated component. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
