SYMPTOMS

In a Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS) 2007 R2 server, event ID 44031 for trusted domains is logged frequently in the event log when one of the following conditions is true:
  • The trusted domain list contains a decommissioned domain name.
  • The trust direction for any trusted domain is set to incoming only.
When this problem occurs, you will see the following event record in OCS 2007 R2 server management console:
Exception occurred in the Exchange Unified Messaging Routing Application while loading dial plans for a domain. Domain: <FQDN>. Exception: System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted at Microsoft.Rtc.Internal.DirectoryServicesAPI.GetDomainContollerName(String domainName, Boolean isDnsName) at Microsoft.Rtc.Internal.Domain.GetDomainControllerName() at Microsoft.Rtc.Internal.ExchangeUmConfiguration.GetDialPlansForDomainController(Domain domain) at Microsoft.Rtc.Internal.ExumDialPlanData.RefreshDomainDictionary()

CAUSE

As part of the integration of OCS 2007 R2 with Exchange server that has Unified Messaging server role installed, OCS 2007 R2 tries to obtain a list of the Exchange Unified Messaging dial plans and servers from all trusted domains. In this scenario, if a trusted domain cannot be reached or if the trust direction for a trusted domain is incoming only, OCS 2007 R2 cannot obtain the list from that domain. Event ID 44031 is logged in the event log for each such domain.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, apply the following updates:
975611  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975611/ ) Description of the cumulative update for Office Communications Server 2007 R2: October, 2009
975613  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975613/ ) Description of the cumulative update for Office Communications Server 2007 R2, Core Components: October 2009

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, remove the decommissioned domains from the trusted domain list.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

After you apply these updates, OCS 2007 R2 queries only those domains for which the current domain can read the Active Directory. For example, OCS 2007 R2 queries domains for which the trust direction for the trusted domain is either two-way or outgoing.
