Cumulative Update 1 for Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) 2010 RC1

This article describes Cumulative Update 1 for Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager 2010 Release Candidate 1 (RC1). This update applies only to Forefront Identity Manager 2010 RC1 (also known as build 4.0.2560.0).

This update is recommended for all installations of Forefront Identity Manager 2010 RC1.

Important The update packages for each Forefront Identity Manager 2010 RC1 component are distributed in a separate update file.

How to obtain Cumulative Update 1 for Forefront Identity Manager 2010 RC1

This update is available for download on the following services:


Note For the release version of Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) 2010, update packages will also be available on the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) server. This service is not available for prerelease products.

We recommend that you download and test these updates before you install them on production computers. Until Forefront Identity Manager 2010 is released, the only method to do this is by using Microsoft Update Catalog.

Important For the Forefront Identity Manager server components, there is a limitation when you use Automatic Updates through the Microsoft Update service. If you configure the Windows Update service on Windows Server 2008 to download the update package and then automatically install the update, you may have problems during the installation of the update package. If you use the Windows Update service to download the update package, we recommend that you work around this issue by configuring the service to download the update package and then prompt for installation.

Steps to perform before you install this update

Before you install this update, follow these steps:

1. Back up all databases, configuration files, encryption keys, certificates, and custom components. This includes the following items:
   • Forefront Identity Manager Product Databases
     • The FIMSynchronizationService database
     • The FIMService database
   • Configuration Files
     • Forefront Identity Manager Synchronization Service
       • All custom rules extensions for the Synchronization Service
       • All custom management agents for the Synchronization Service
       • All needed data from the MAData folder
       • The MIIServer.exe.config file
       • Encryption keys
         
         Note To back up the encryption keys, use the Synchronization Service Key Management tool.
   • Forefront Identity Manager Service
     • Microsoft.ResourceManagement.Service.exe.config
     • Certificates specified during the Forefront Identity Manager Service setup
     • Custom workflows
     • Custom clients
   • Forefront Identity Manager Portals
     
     Notes
     • To back up the Forefront Identity Manager Portal sites, make sure that the Forefront Identity Manager Portals are available on http://localhost. If the portals are not available, you must make some configuration changes so that this address can be accessed before you apply the update package. After the update package is installed, you can revert the temporary change.
     • The http://localhost address may be inaccessible on the Forefront Identity Manager Portal server if you have enabled SSL, or if you have made some other change so that http://localhost cannot be accessed.
