Introduction

This article describes an update that consists of the shared components for the Microsoft .NET Framework in Windows Server 2003 and in Windows XP. The update addresses a set of issues of the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and the .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Note This update modifies binaries that are shared between .NET Framework 4 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. This update is not required for installing .NET Framework 4. However, removing this update while .NET Framework 4 is present would roll back the .NET Framework changes to these shared binaries. Therefore, uninstallation of KB976576 is unsupported and disabled when .NET 4 is present.

Prerequisites

You must have the .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 or the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installed on the following operating systems:
  • Windows Server 2003 SP2
  • Windows XP SP2
  • Windows XP SP3
To install this update, you must have Windows Installer 3.1 or higher installed on the computer. To obtain the latest version of Windows Installer, visit the following Microsoft website:

Restart requirement

You may have to restart the computer if the affected files are being used or are locked. To reduce the probability of a restart, you should close all applications before you install the update.

Update removal information

To remove this update, use the Add or Remove Programs item in Control Panel.

Update replacement information

This update does not replace any other updates.
