INTRODUCTION

This article describes the behavior of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 when a user tries to view the source code of an ASPX page.

MORE INFORMATION

Conceptually, there are two kinds of ASPX pages: pages that are stored in a document library (for example, http://contoso/documents/default.aspx) and pages that stored outside a document library (http://contoso/default.aspx).

Users can view the source code of .aspx files that are stored in a document library if they have the Open Items permission. Users who do not have the Open Items permission cannot view the source code of .aspx files that are stored in a document library.

Users who have the Read permission level can view the source code of .aspx files that are stored in a document library. Users who have the View Only permission level do not have the Open Items permission. Therefore, they cannot view the source code of .aspx files that are stored in a document library. For more information about the default permission levels in SharePoint Server 2007, visit the following Microsoft Web sites:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc721640.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc288074.aspx

For pages that are stored outside a document library, users can view the source code of .aspx files if they have the Add and Customize Pages permission. Users who do not have this permission cannot view the source code of .aspx files that are stored outside a document library. By default in SharePoint Server 2007, users who have the Full Control permission level or the Design permission level can view the source code of .aspx files that are stored outside a document library.

For detailed guidance about securely designing and deploying SharePoint environments, see the Security and Protection documentation for SharePoint Server 2007 on the following Microsoft TechNet Web site:
