FIX: The SQL Server 2008 agent does not automatically resume running after you upgrade to SQL Server 2008 CU7 or SQL Server 2008 SP1 CU3/CU4 in a stand-alone environment

SYMPTOMS

In a stand-alone environment of Microsoft SQL Server 2008, you upgrade SQL Server 2008 to one of the following versions:

SQL Server 2008 Cumulative Update (CU) 7, build number from 10.00.1818 to 10.00.1822.
973601 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973601/ ) Cumulative update package 7 for SQL Server 2008
SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) CU3 or CU4, build number from 10.00.2734 to 10.00.2739.
971491 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971491/ ) Cumulative update package 3 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1
973602 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973602/ ) Cumulative update package 4 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1

However, after you complete the upgrade, the SQL Server agent does not automatically resume running even if it was running before you performed the upgrade.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the following table to find the appropriate method for your version of SQL Server.

SQL Server 2008 SP1	SQL Server 2008 SP1, build number from 10.00.2734 to 10.00.2739	Use the method that is described in the "Workaround" section. Or, install the hotfix that is mentioned in Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article 976761.

To know whether the version of SQL Server that is installed on your computer is affected by this problem, check whether the version of the Sqlagent.exe file matches one of the affected versions in the "Symptoms" section. Generally, the Sqlagent.exe file is in one of the following folders, depending on whether SQL Server is installed by using Windows on Windows (WOW) mode.
